MIPCOM Preview Magazine 2007
In Focus: Personality of the Year
LESLIE Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corporation, is recipient of the MIPCOM 2007 Personality Of The Year award. He will receive the award from Reed MIDEM CEO Paul Zilk at a gala dinner at the Carlton on Tuesday, August 9. The day before, Moonves will give the MIPCOM Opening Keynote, in the Grand Auditorium at 17.00.
Speaking exclusively to MIPCOM Magazine, Moonves explained why the award was important to him at this period in the industry’s evolution. “The television world has really evolved into to truly a worldwide adventure. I’ve been going to MIPCOM for many, many years, and the world marketplace is very important, so to be honoured like this by a group of international broadcasting people is very important to us,” He added: “MIPCOM is clearly important to us too, and with Armando’s (Nunez) guidance there, a lot of our products have been sold throughout the world.”
Before the CBS-Viacom split in 2005, Leslie Moonves was co-president and co-COO of Viacom, and chairman of CBS. Today, as president and CEO of CBS Corp., he oversees all operations of the company, from CBS Television Network, to CW (a joint venture between CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment), and from CBS Paramount International Television, Showtime, and CSTV Networks, to CBS Outdoor, Simon & Schuster, and CBS Feature Films.
For Moonves, one of the keys to the success of CBS is the strong team of executives with which he works – some of whom have been with him for almost 20 years. “We’ve been through a lot of battles together,” he said. “I think loyalty is very important and the team ethic means a lot to me.”
Many industry observers credit Moonves with an innate understanding of what makes good television. “I still am actively involved in the creative process with my team in California,” he said.
