Reed Elsevier is pleased to support the Prince’s Rainforest Project’s campaign to halt the destruction of the world’s rainforests.
As detailed in our publications, like Ecosystems Ecology, rainforests play a key role in removing carbon from the atmosphere. Though they cover just 2% of the earth, they store water, regulate rainfall and contain over half the planet's biodiversity. They also absorb almost a fifth of the world’s man-made CO2 emissions every year, yet they are being destroyed at a shocking rate, with tropical deforestation releasing an extra 17% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions.
If nothing changes, 100 million hectares of tropical forests will be destroyed over the next 10 years, an area the size of Egypt.
As a global leader in scientific information, the opinion of our experts is reflected in the Reed Elsevier Climate Change statement which makes clear global warming is happening.
