Helping disadvantaged kids.

The Hacienda orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico, aims to transform the lives of children through education and we are helping them. RE Cares of Southern California – part of Reed Elsevier’s thriving community investment programme – teamed up with the charity Corazon de Vida to support Project Hacienda, providing funding drawn from our businesses around the world. We were delighted to support this project and to be given a Community Partnership Recognition award from Corazon de Vida.

Publish on demand

Part of our mission is to create cost-effective and convenient solutions for our customers – ones that make sense to them and to Reed Elsevier. Elsevier – our Science and Medical division – has launched a new initiative allowing some new books to be published on demand, improving warehousing, cost efficiency and flexibility. For instance, we’re working with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants to publish printed reference books and study materials – with full ISBN referencing – only when they are ordered. It’s convenient and reliable for customers and profitable for us.

Endangered dolphins

Ultan Golding, from Reed Business Netherlands, won first prize in Reed Elsevier’s World Environment Day and the chance to join a 12-day Earthwatch expedition to study endangered dolphins in Spain. “Seeing these beautiful marine mammals in their natural habitat was an overwhelming feeling,” says Ultan. “To think that they are threatened with extinction made me more determined to spread the word of Earthwatch’s good work.”

Clean sweep

Cleaning garbage from the Great Miami River is just one of the many environmental projects that have been helped by volunteers from Reed Elsevier. A team from LexisNexis joined around 1,000 volunteers on the big clean up. In Georgia a team from Reed Construction Data paddled five miles of otherwise inaccessible water on the Chattahoochee River – the Old Hooch – to clear trash as part of the state’s Rivers Alive initiative.

€28,000 raised

Médecins Sans Frontiers provides help and healthcare to people in some of the world’s most dangerous trouble-spots and natural disaster zones. Reed Business Germany wanted to help. Drawing on support from colleagues across Reed Business Information, from customers, suppliers and the readers of Arztliche Praxis, a weekly journal for GPs, we set out to raise €20,000 for MSF. In the end we were able to hand over a cheque for €28,000 and money continues to come in for this great organisation.

Tree Trackers

The UK has never had a register of its most cherished ancient trees. But that’s changing with help from people across Reed Elsevier. Working with the Woodland Trust, they’ve helped to start the first ever authoritative database. As part of our World Environment day, staff attended workshops with the Trust. Then they went back to their offices and formed teams to track trees in their local areas. In all, they recorded 238 ancient trees, including one measuring 11.10m high and one 300-year-old oak growing beside an 18th-century lock-up for minor felons.
